W trees

Delbard Nursery has found a niche in the retail market growing

Delbard Nursery has found a niche in the retail market growing "ready-to-fruit" trees for backyard gardeners.

Delbard has found success at the retail level with its W or palmette U double container trees.

The five-year-old trees, sold in containers, are already trained to a W trellis and will produce fruit a year after being planted. The trees, which retail for about $150 per tree, represent many hours of labor in the field for training as well as removing the wires when the trees are dug for retail sales. Delbard grows a total of about 150,000 W trees annually, with up to one-fifth old enough to be sold each year.

They also produce columnar apple trees for the retail market.
