Winewise
With sustainable viticulture addressed by Vinewise, Washington's wine industry is now putting together a similar on-line educational tool for wineries, called Winewise.
Vicky Scharlau, executive director of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers, said that Winewise will be more technical in nature, covering such winery aspects as handling wastewater and solid waste, energy efficiency, green packaging, and carbon footprints.
Several of the topics already completed by Vinewise, including developing a business plan, lending, contracts, and human resources, relate to wineries as well as to grape producers, she noted. On-line cost-of-production calculators developed for white and red wine grape varieties provide current profit and loss information to help in varietal planning.
She added that as with Vinewise, which was created by growers for growers, the checklists and self-assessment evaluations of Winewise will be created by Washington winery personnel.
