Canada’s David Lane honored for cherry breeding…
Dr. David Lane has received an award of appreciation from the Okanagan Kootenay Cherry Growers’ Association in British Columbia, Canada, for his work as a cherry breeder.
Lane began his career as a research scientist at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre in Summerland, British Columbia, in 1974, continuing the fruit breeding program after the retirement of Dr. Karlos Lapins.
Lane bred apples and sweet cherries until 1994, when he began working in biotechnology of fruit crops. He released a number of significant cherry varieties, including Lapins and Sweetheart, which have sparked renewed economic success for the British Columbia cherry industry.
Domex hires Loren Queen as director of marketing…
Domex Marketing, Inc., of Yakima, Washington, has hired Loren Queen as director of marketing and communications. Queen was previously with a fresh-cut apple processor based in Othello, Washington, and the International Fresh-cut Produce Association in Alexandria, Virginia.
Domex is one of Washington State’s largest fruit marketing firms, handling both conventional and organic apples, pears, cherries, and stone fruits. One of Queen’s responsibilities will be to communicate the company’s brand message to both the trade and consumers.
