United Fresh hires food safety veteran
With a 25-year career in food safety, Dr. Barry Eisenberg, formerly with River Ranch Fresh Foods, was recently hired as the new vice president of food safety services for the United Fresh Produce Association. In the new position, Eisenberg will develop education programs, training, and individualized expert support to help companies with food safety planning and compliance with best practices and regulations, according to a news release.
Eisenberg received his doctorate in postharvest physiology from the Ohio State University before working with Campbell Soup Company, with Chiquita Brands, and then as head of the Environmental Horticultural Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo. He then returned to the private sector, working for vegetable grower-shippers Apio, Inc., and Growers Express. At River Ranch Fresh Foods, he coordinated quality assurance, food safety, and research and product development for their United States, Guatemala, Chile, and Mexico operations.
He is a past board of directors’ member of United Fresh, was chair of the Grower Shipper Association of Central California’s food safety council, member of the California Leafy Green Marketing Agreement’s technical committee, and member of scientific research review committees for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Center for Produce Safety. Eisenberg will work from United Fresh’s western regional office in Salinas, California.
