Bob Woehler, a journalist who devoted most of his career to writing about Washington State viticulture and wines, died August 24, shortly after his 79th birthday.

Woehler, of Kennewick, Washington, was born in Hamilton, Montana, and lived also in Alaska and Washington during his youth. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduating from Kennewick High School in 1950 and served in the Korean War.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Washington and after graduating worked at the Tri-City Herald. He became interested in the Washington wine industry in the late 1970s while covering agriculture for the Herald.

He wrote passionately about wines for more than 30 years, continuing after he retired as a reporter in 1994. He was a founding columnist of the Wine Press Northwest, which began in 1998. He received the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers’ Industry Service Award in 2007.

Woehler is survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Judith and Rebecca, and sons Andrew and Thomas.
