The French impressionist painter Claude Monet used Calville Blanc d'Hiver as a subject for his painting "Apple and Grapes."

Earlier, the variety, which originated in either France or Germany in around 1627, was served to King Louis XIII of France.

Today, the variety survives in a Michigan orchard. Learn about this and other antique apples in the August issue of Good Fruit Grower magazine.
