Washington grape exec leads national group
Vicky Scharlau
Vicky Scharlau, executive director of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers, was elected 2012 chair of the National Grape and Wine Initiative, a national coalition representing all segments of U.S. grapes and grape products.
Other newly elected officers are: vice chair, Rick Stark, California Raisin Marketing Board; secretary-treasurer, Richard Smith, California’s Paraiso Vineyards: and, past chair, John Martini, Anthony Road Winery in New York.
The national group’s mission is to drive research to maximize the productivity, sustainability, and competitiveness of the U.S. grape industries. Committees comprising industry members focus on research needs and spearhead activities to ensure that projects are funded, objectives achieved, and information disseminated to the industry.
