Web site provides food info

The Alliance for Food and Fiber recently launched the Web site www.safefruitsandveggies.com as a resource for science-based information about pesticide residues so consumers can make educated shopping choices and include more fruits and vegetables in their diet with confidence.

The Web site, which was designed for consumers, features information from experts in the fields of toxicology, nutrition, risk analysis, consumer attitudes, organic and conventional pesticide usage trends, and farming, according to Marilyn Dolan, Alliance executive director. A popular feature is the calculator function that calculates the number of servings in a day of a selected fruit or vegetable that a person would have and still not see any effect from pesticide residues.

Other popular sections on the website are “Ask the Experts,” which includes videos of farmers explaining how they control pests and diseases and a list of the most popular fruits and vegetables with explanations of their nutritional values.

The Web site also includes a section on 12 reasons not to use the Dirty Dozen list, a list annually published by the Environmental Working Group of foods that consumers should avoid.
