The Ontario Tender Fruit Producers Marketing Board has launched a new Web site for growers and marketers to use as a marketing and communications tool. The site is at www.ontariotenderfruit.ca.

The board represents growers of peaches, nectarines, pears, plums, seedless grapes, and chilled and pitted tart and sweet cherries.

“We are excited to offer our growers and marketers new ways to promote and sell the great tender fruit we grow here in Ontario,” said Phil Tregunno, a farmer and the organization’s chair, in the announcement. “Consumers are increasingly looking for information about where their food comes from, and our Web site offers resources to help do that.”

The site incorporates QR (quick response) codes, a kind of bar code that can be read by a smartphone and other electronic devices. The codes can be requested for download by packers and marketers who want to include them on packaging or marketing materials. A customer scans the bar code and receives information about the product while looking at it in the supermarket.

The Web site has a consumer section and a password-protected grower-only section that provides price and market information, industry contacts, and an online discussion forum.
