The Washington State University Entomology laboratory and WSU Viticulture Extension laboratory are conducting several insect and disease scouting surveys and are welcoming participants who would like to take part in the development of improved vineyard pest management practices. Here are the details:

Grape Leaffolder Survey

The Entomology laboratory at WSU-Prosser is conducting a survey of Grape leaffolder incidence and abundance in wine grapes this summer.

If you had grape leaffolders (caterpillars that fold then eat grape leaves) in your vineyard last season, or if you begin experiencing this feeding this season, please email David James (david_james@wsu.edu). This survey is supported by the Washington State Grape and Wine Research Program and will help us identify the leaffolder species involved and the extent of the problem.

Statewide Crown Gall Survey

The WSU Viticulture Extension laboratory at WSU-Prosser is continuing our statewide survey to monitor the incidence of Crown Gall in vineyards under 10 years of age (whether it’s a new planting or a recent graft-over).

If you have crown gall in your vineyard and are interested in participating in this study, please contact contact Maria Mireles at mmireles@wsu.edu to schedule a site visit. This survey is supported by the Washington State Grape and Wine Research Program and the WSDA Grapevine Grower Assessment.

Esca Trunk Disease Survey

The WSU Viticulture Extension laboratory at WSU-Prosser, in partnership with UC-Davis and USDA-ARS, is conducting a statewide (Washington) survey for Esca trunk disease.

If you suspect you have Esca in your vineyard and are interested in participating in this study, please contact Michelle Moyer at michelle.moyer@wsu.edu. This survey is supported by the the USDA-AMS Multi-State granting program.

Grape Powdery Mildew Fungicide Resistance Survey

The WSU Viticulture Extension laboratory at WSU-Prosser, in partnership with USDA-ARS Corvallis, is conducting a statewide survey for fungicide resistance in grape powdery mildew.

If you have powdery mildew in your vineyard, please contact Maria Mireles at mmireles@wsu.edu for information on how to collect samples for testing. This survey is supported by the Washington State Grape and Wine Research Program.
