The Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center announced in a news release a series of workshops and webinars focused on the latest fire blight information from a national research project involving Michigan, North Carolina, New York, California, Oregon and Washington, funded by the Specialty Crop Research Initiative.

Workshops

Fire Blight Fruit School

—Feb. 23, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Pacific Time) in Wenatchee, Washington, and online. 

—March 1, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Eastern Time) in Traverse City, Michigan, and online.

Topics include: 

—Introduction to the pathogen.

—The basics of bloom infection prevention with antibiotics.

—Antibiotic resistance.

—Biopesticide efficacy.

—Using prohexadione calcium and Actigard for shoot blight management.

—Managing fire blight infections with pruning and sanitation.

—Using systemic acquired-resistance products during tree removal.

Three pesticide recertification credits will be available, with agency approval.

Sara Villani, North Carolina State University, will lead a discussion on how to use weather and environmental data to optimize timings of biologicals and biopesticide applications for effective fire blight control. 

One pesticide recertification credit will be available per session, with agency approval.
