The Washington State Tree Fruit Association is sponsoring one-day United Fresh Recall Ready workshops in Yakima and Wenatchee in late March to help industry members prepare for potential recalls.
According to the association, in 2015 there were four recalls of fresh, whole apples and the largest tree fruit recall in history took place the year before. Tree fruit is still considered a low-risk category when it comes to food safety, but recalls do happen and the new Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires all FDA-registered facilities to have a written recall plan.
Workshop topics include:
- How to handle a call from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
- Understanding a company’s regulatory responsibilities and legal liability before, during and after a call
- How and when to communicate with customers, consumers and the media
- How to minimize the negative impact of a recall
- How to write a basic recall plan
- What to expect when FDA visits the farm or packing warehouse
