West Mathison, president of Stemilt Growers, Wenatchee, Washington, has been named as one of Vance Publishing’s 2014 class of “40 Under 40” young leaders.
Experts predict that by 2050 the world population will rise from 7 to 9 billion and food production will need to double.
The “40 Under 40” awards recognize innovative people in agriculture, who are aged under 40 and show leadership and commitment to meeting that challenge.
Mathison, 38, succeeded his grandfather and company founder Tom Mathison as president of Stemilt Growers in 2005. He has also served on several industry boards, including the Washington Apple Commission, the Washington State Horticultural Association, and the Washington State Tree Fruit Association.
Vance Publishing publishes the weekly produce industry newspaper, The Packer.
